BIP draft builder

Turn what your team learned from the functional behavior assessment into a one-page behavior intervention plan draft. Pick common wording or write your own, then print it for the meeting. No account, and nothing leaves your browser.

A BIP belongs to the student's team. This page gives the team a clear first draft to review, change, and agree on together.

Step 1 of 4: Target behavior

Initials only. Nothing you type here is sent anywhere.

Target behavior

Pick the one behavior the plan is for. A second is fine if they always happen together.

What an adult would see or hear, clear enough that two people would count the same moments.

Behavior Intervention Plan

Student: ________

Draft for the team to review

1. Target behavior

Choose the behavior this plan is for.

Operational definition: what an adult would see or hear.

2. What the FBA suggests

Likely triggers: to be discussed

Hypothesized function: still open

3. Replacement behavior

What the student can do instead to meet the same need.

4. Prevention and teaching strategies

What adults will do before the hard moment.

5. Responses

When the replacement behavior is used

How adults will reinforce it.

When the behavior happens

Calm, consistent adult responses.

6. Data collection and review

A draft to discuss, change, and agree on with the student's team. A behavior intervention plan comes from the functional behavior assessment and the team's decisions, not from this page.

Before you fill it in

Start from the ABC data

The triggers and the function come from patterns across several days and adults. The free ABC data sheet is a good place to collect them.

One behavior at a time

A plan that tries to change five behaviors at once rarely changes any. Pick the one that matters most for the student's learning or safety.

Same need, better way

The replacement behavior should get the student what the behavior gets them, and be as quick and easy to use in the moment.

Plan the review now

Pick the data method and a review date before the meeting ends, so the team can tell whether the plan is helping.

Common questions

Is this a finished behavior intervention plan?

No. It is a draft to bring to the team. A BIP comes out of a functional behavior assessment and is agreed by the student's IEP or student support team, often with a behavior specialist, the family, and the student where it fits. The builder gives that conversation a clear starting page so the meeting spends its time on the decisions.

What goes into a BIP?

Most plans cover the same parts: an observable definition of the target behavior, what tends to come before it, the team's hypothesis about what the behavior does for the student, a replacement behavior that meets the same need, ways to prevent the hard moments and teach the new skill, how adults respond and reinforce, and how the team will collect data and when it will review the plan.

Why does the plan ask for a function?

A strategy works when it meets the same need the behavior meets. If a student leaves the room to get away from a hard task, a sticker for staying will not last, but a break card and a smaller first step often will. The function is the team's best hypothesis from the ABC data, and it can stay open until the data points one way.

How do I write an operational definition?

Describe what an adult would see or hear, specific enough that two people would count the same moments. "Puts head down or pushes materials away within 2 minutes of a written task" works. "Is defiant" does not, because two adults will not agree on when it happened.

Does this tool store anything about the student?

No. The page asks for initials only and nothing is sent to a server. The draft lives in this tab and is gone when you close it. If you choose to create an Evident account from the page, the draft is saved in this browser only, so the plan can pick up from it once you add the student.

Can I use this as a behavior contract?

A behavior contract is a smaller agreement between a student and an adult. The replacement behavior, reinforcement, and review date from this draft are the core of one, so the printed page is a good starting point for that conversation too.
