Evident Capture is a free Chrome extension for logging IEP data without opening the Evident dashboard. It suits teachers who spend the day in Google Classroom, Docs, or a Chromebook: open the popup, pick the student and goal, enter the value, save.
Install and connect
Go to evidentk12.com/extension and choose Add to Chrome, which opens the Chrome Web Store listing for Evident Capture: IEP Data Collection. After installing, pin it from Chrome's puzzle-piece menu so it is one click away.
Click the extension and choose Connect to Evident (or New here? Create a free account). A small sign-in window opens; sign in and choose Connect on the Connect Evident Capture? screen. You can disconnect at any time by signing out of the extension in its settings.
If your school manages Chromebooks, IT may need to approve the extension. The page at evidentk12.com/extension/it-approval is a one-page approval sheet you can send them.
If you have no students yet
A connected account with no students sees Add your first student in the popup. Enter the student's initials or first name, one goal, and how you measure it (Met / not met, Count, Duration, Trials, or Intervals), then choose Add student and log a data point.
The extension creates the student and goal on your account. Set the real target, goal area, and any other goals later on the student's Goals tab in the dashboard.
Log a data point
On the Log tab, choose the student (recent students come first), then the goal. The value control matches the goal's measurement type: Met or Not met, a count stepper, a duration, or correct out of total for trials and intervals.
Optionally choose a prompt level (Independent, Verbal, Gestural, Model, Partial physical, Full physical) and add a note, then Save data point. The date and time come from your device.
The Today tab lists students with active goals who have nothing logged today, so you can see who still needs a data point before the day ends.
Attach a work sample from the page
Quote selection copies the text you highlighted on the page, with the page title and address. Screenshot captures the visible tab and lets you drag to crop, so only the selected area is uploaded.
Choose a type (Work sample, Growth moment, Observation, IEP progress, or Concern), add a short description, and Save evidence. The note is saved as private on the student's record. Chrome does not allow reading text on its own pages, such as the Web Store or settings pages.
Offline and syncing
If you lose the connection, saved entries wait on the device and send in order when you are back online. The status line at the bottom of the popup shows Synced or how many entries are waiting, with Retry now.
If you are signed out, entries stay queued until you reconnect. If your school has turned the extension off for your organization, entries also stay queued and the popup explains why.
Frequently asked questions
Does the extension cost anything?
No. Evident Capture is free and works with the free plan, which holds 30 students.
Can I show initials instead of student names?
Yes. In the extension's settings, turn on Initials only.
Does it read the pages I visit?
Only when you ask it to. The extension has no access to a page until you open the popup, and it reads text or takes a screenshot only when you choose Quote selection or Screenshot.
Does it work on a Chromebook?
Yes. It runs anywhere Chrome extensions do, including managed Chromebooks once IT allows it.
Is there a keyboard shortcut?
Not built in. You can assign one yourself in Chrome's extension shortcuts settings.
