A replacement behavior is the better option you teach a student so they no longer need the problem behavior to get what they were after. The idea is simple to state and easy to get wrong. The replacement is not just any positive behavior you would like to see. It is a specific behavior that gets the student the same thing the problem behavior was getting, only faster and more reliably. Miss that and you have taught a skill the student has no reason to use.
The core idea in plain terms
Every behavior that keeps happening is working for the student. It is getting them something: a break from a hard task, an adult's attention, a wanted item, a sensory result. That something is the function. A replacement behavior has to deliver the same function through an acceptable means.
Here is the part teams skip. A replacement that serves the same function is necessary but not enough. It also has to be easier and more reliable than the problem behavior. If a student can get out of writing by tearing up the paper in one move, and your replacement asks them to raise a hand, wait to be called on, and explain that they need a break, you have made the good option slower and less certain than the bad one. The student is not being defiant when they go back to tearing the paper. They are being efficient. The behavior that works with the least effort wins.
So the test for a replacement behavior is not "is this a nice behavior" but "does this get the same payoff with less work." That is the whole game.
This also explains a frustration teams report often: they taught the student a calming strategy, the student can describe it perfectly, and the student never uses it when it counts. Usually the calming strategy was not a functional replacement. Deep breathing is a fine self-regulation skill, but if the function was escape from a hard task, breathing does not get the student the escape. It asks them to stay in the hard situation and feel calmer about it, which is not what the problem behavior was for. The student understands the breathing perfectly and still reaches for the behavior that actually ends the task, because only one of those two options addresses the function. A replacement has to compete with the problem behavior on the problem behavior's own terms.
Functional equivalence comes first
Before lower effort even matters, the candidate has to be functionally equivalent, meaning it produces the same outcome the problem behavior produced. This is the filter you apply first, because a low-effort behavior that gets the wrong thing is no replacement at all.
Take attention as the function. A student calls out and clowns during instruction, and the payoff is that adults and peers turn toward them. A replacement that gives them a quiet corner to work alone is low effort, but it gets them the opposite of what they wanted, so they will never use it. The functionally equivalent replacement gives them attention through an acceptable channel: a share card that gets them called on first, a classroom job that puts eyes on them, a scheduled check-in that delivers adult attention before the calling out starts. Match the function first, then make it efficient. Reverse the order and you build easy behaviors no student has any reason to use.
The response-effort test
Before you commit to a replacement, run your candidate through a short test. For each problem behavior, name its function, propose a candidate replacement, and then ask plainly why the replacement is lower effort or higher payoff than the original. If you cannot answer that last column, the replacement will not hold.

A teaching sequence that holds up
Choosing the replacement is half the work. The other half is teaching it so the student can do it under stress, not just on a worksheet about feelings. A replacement taught only by telling the student about it will not appear in the hard moment. Teach it the way you would teach any skill: model, practice when calm, prompt when it counts, reinforce hard, then fade.
- Model it first. Show the replacement yourself, in a calm moment, so the student sees exactly what it looks like before they are asked to do it. Say the words, hold up the card, take the break.
- Practice during calm. Rehearse the replacement when the student is regulated, several times a day, so the skill is fluent before it is needed. A skill practiced only in the hard moment is being learned at the worst possible time.
- Prompt it in the real moment. When the trigger shows up, prompt the replacement before the problem behavior starts. Watch for the early signs and cue the break request while the student can still use it.
- Reinforce immediately. The first dozens of times, honor the replacement instantly and every single time, with no delay or negotiation. Dense, immediate reinforcement is what teaches the student that the new behavior pays off better than the old one.
- Fade the prompt, not the payoff. As the student starts using the replacement on their own, slowly reduce your prompting. Keep honoring the replacement. You fade your help, not the reinforcement the behavior earns.
The order matters. Teams that jump to step three, prompting in the moment, without steps one and two, are asking the student to perform a skill they have never practiced, at the moment they are least able to learn it.
The reinforcement step is the one teams underdo. Early on, the replacement has to pay off more richly than the problem behavior ever did, which feels like a lot. If the break request earns an instant break the first thirty times, every time, the student learns the new behavior is the reliable one. If it earns a break sometimes, and a "in a minute" other times, the student learns it is unreliable and goes back to what always worked. Generous, immediate, predictable reinforcement at the start is not spoiling the student. It is paying the price of teaching the skill. You thin the reinforcement later, once the behavior is established, not while you are still building it.
A full teaching sequence for a break request
Here is the sequence run all the way through for a break-request replacement, the most common form of functional communication training for an escape function.
A composite fifth grader we will call Andre, whose FBA found his behavior serves escape from writing.
Replacement: Andre hands over a break card or says "I need a two-minute break" to request a short, structured break.
Week one, model and calm practice. Three times a day, in easy moments, the teacher says "When writing gets hard, you can ask for a break, like this," and models handing over the card. Andre then practices handing it over and immediately gets a two-minute break at the designated spot. No writing demand is attached to the practice yet.
Week two, prompt in the real moment. When the writing task is handed out and the teacher sees Andre grip the pencil and tense up, she prompts quietly: "You can ask for a break." When he hands over the card, she honors it instantly: "Good asking. Two minutes." After the break, he returns to the chunk he left.
Throughout, reinforce immediately. Every break request is honored at once, every time, for the first few weeks. The break is short and structured so it competes with, but does not replace, the work.
By week four, fade the prompt. Andre begins handing over the card before the teacher prompts. She stops cueing him and simply keeps honoring the request. The skill is now his.
Notice that the work never disappears. Andre gets a break, not an escape from the assignment. The break request out-competes the old behavior on speed and certainty while the task stays on the desk.
A caution on extinction
It is tempting to pair a replacement with extinction, meaning you stop letting the problem behavior work. Sometimes that is part of the plan. But the order is everything.
The throughline of this whole article is one rule: the student will use the behavior that works best for the least effort. Your job is to make the acceptable behavior the one that wins on both counts, teach it until it is fluent, and reinforce it until it is automatic.
