Evident translates family-facing updates into 28 languages, including Spanish, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese, Somali, and Ukrainian. Translation starts from the chart's family language, and the student's name is taken out before any text is sent for translation and put back on your device.
Set the family language
Open the chart editor and, under Family language, choose the Target Language. The family portal, goal labels, and reward text then appear in that language, with English available.
Each chart has one family language. If two households read different languages, set the chart to the language most needed and share the other household's updates in English or through your interpreter process.
Daily notes translate automatically
On the Behavior chart tab, the Daily Family Note is private by default. Turn on Share with parents and, if the chart has a Target Language, the note is translated when you save and appears in the portal in that language. You will see Auto-translated to the language under the note.
Daily notes do not have a preview step, so write them in short, plain sentences. The family portal notes that the translation is automatic and that English is the original.
How names are protected
Before any text is sent for translation, the student's name is replaced with a placeholder, and the name is restored on your device when the translation returns. If the translation comes back without the placeholders intact, it is rejected rather than shown.
For weekly summaries and packets, you see the redacted text, can edit it, and confirm you reviewed it before anything is translated. Translation on the EU deployment runs in the EU through Mistral AI.
Weekly summaries and packets
The Family summary card on the student's Evidence tab drafts a weekly summary from notes marked Family with Include in family summaries checked. Review and edit it, use Review Translation for the family language, then Copy it into your usual channel. Nothing is sent automatically.
A Family shared evidence packet can be exported with Translate for family. The PDF shows each translation above the original English.
Write notes that translate well
Idioms translate badly. Tough day, Sofia melted down during centers and couldn't get it together can come out confusing or alarming. Rewrite it: During center time Sofia became upset and needed about ten minutes with an adult before rejoining the group. She used her break card once.
For IEP meetings, discipline conversations, and formal notices, use a qualified interpreter or your district's translation process. Automatic translation is for everyday updates.
